Leadership Dimensions designed and continue to deliver BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management, a leadership qualification customised to Downer Group and its diverse divisions.
Downer is the leading provider of integrated services in Australia and New Zealand. It works closely with its customers to design, build and sustain assets, infrastructure and facilities. The Group employs approximately 44,000 people across more than 300 sites, primarily in Australia and New Zealand and also in the Asia-Pacific region, South America and Southern Africa.
A long-term client, Downer approached Leadership Dimensions (the leadership division of Learning Dimensions Network) six years ago with a desire to further support their frontline leaders.
We know that clients who invest significantly in their employees develop competent and confident people who build skills, knowledge and experience within the organisation, often leading to those individuals being promoted. Companies that are adept at identifying this talent are also proficient in setting new managers and leaders up for success. Early on, Downer recognised the importance of investing in its frontline leaders and one of its strategies was to partner with Leadership Dimensions to develop a highly customised, nationally accredited qualification in Leadership and Management.
The program is modularised to suit the different business divisions across Downer, all of which have varying requirements around how the training needs to be delivered. For example, employees from remote mining projects will require a different solution to those on working on rail or gas projects.
This program has been delivered to almost 2,000 Downer employees across Australia and has developed a solid reputation for being able to impart the tangible, practical leadership skills needed on the ground.

With many opportunities in the program to reflect on their attitudes and beliefs, learners say their insights into their own leadership style directly impacts their ability to communicate more effectively, draw on a wider range of leadership skills in challenging situations, and be more mindful about their leadership approach.
One learner said: âI ve found it really useful to take time away from the work-site to look at the way I lead others, my underlying beliefs, and the way it all comes out in my communication with others. Understanding the concept of âAbove the Lineâ and âBelow the Lineâ behaviours (taking accountability, ownership and responsibility vs blame, excuses and denial) has been really eye-opening. I can think of so many examples of times I was leading with âBelow the Lineâ behaviours that just don t get the best out of people. I can now see how the way I am (as a leader) has a direct impact on the behaviours of those around me and the results we can achieve.â

About the company
Nufarm are a global player in the world of Agricultural chemicals. In Australia and New Zealand, they maintain manufacturing and marketing operations employing more than 3,400 people, all of whom make a vital contribution to the company s reputation for quality products, innovation, first-class marketing and technical support.
The need
To develop and deliver a 2-hour workshop to launch a new drug and alcohol and fatigue policy and procedure and an online induction and verification of competency program supported with a video.
The solution
The face-to-face training focused on creating personal relevance as to the reason the new policy was expanded to include other areas that may impact the ability to be Fit to Work and included education, resources and support available.
To educate new hires, a shorter version of the face-to-face program was created to be uploaded to Nufarm s induction platform.
Topics included: fatigue, mental wellness and mental illness, the impact of over-the-counter and prescribed medications, drugs and alcohol and dehydration.
The results
Delivery included verification of competency through an online assessment. The program commenced across Australia and New Zealand in 2021 and is ongoing.

About the company
Warakirri Asset Management is 100% owned by its Directors and employees and provides specialist investment to meet the needs of charities, superannuation and individual investors across Australian, global and emerging markets equity. As part of its portfolio, the Warakirri Diversified Agriculture Fund owns and develops a diversified portfolio of investment grade agricultural assets.
These include:
- Warakirri Cropping 100,000ha of broad acre cropping farms in Victoria, Southern and Northern NSW, Southern Queensland and Western Australia.
- Daybreak Cropping over 75,000 ha in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Western Australia.

The need
To conduct a safety culture survey to benchmark the different safety cultures within the various portfolios (divisions). Warakirri also wanted design and delivery of a 2 day Safety Leadership program for identified key leaders.
The results
Safety Dimensions conducted focus groups, surveys and one-on-one interviews to review and analyse the safety culture of each division.
Safety Dimensions provided benchmarking of Warakirri Asset Management s current performance against other organisations who have a high performing safety culture and provided individual recommendations (via a roadmap) for each of the three business divisions to move towards their desired culture levels.
During this time Safety Dimensions also designed and delivered a 2 day Safety Leadership program to key leaders within the organisation.
As a result, in depth written reports and analysis were presented and discussed with each CEO of the Warakirri divisions, as well as a collective discussion on recommendations to inform their three-year safety culture strategy.

JJ Richards provides an extensive range of commercial and domestic services, providing customers with total waste management solutions for all of their waste needs.
JJ s has operations throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Tasmania and New Zealand. They have a fleet of over 1,800 vehicles and employ over 2,200 people. They perform a variety of solid, hazardous and liquid waste collection services for over 110,000 commercial customers and perform 2.5 million domestic garbage, recycling, sanitary and green waste collections services per week under contract for 63 local authorities throughout Australia and New Zealand.
The need
JJ s Waste recognised hazard identification as the first line of defence and wanted to create hazard identification simulation training for staff attending client sites to discuss bin locations and safe emptying or bin removal. These include large civil sites as well as smaller project sites and private properties.
The solution
Designed to be scenario-based and taught through simulated experiences, this highly relevant program addressed the difficulty JJ s Waste are faced given the wide range of potential hazards and risk mitigation required (including interaction with the general public).
Safety Dimensions designed, piloted and conducted a Train the Trainer with key internal staff so the program can be conducted internally moving forward. However, Safety Dimensions remains contracted to continue delivery given the high standard of facilitation and program outcomes.
The results
Initially delivered to JJ s Waste Sales Representatives, due to its success, the program was expanded to all key staff.

The results
Through a consultative process Safety Dimensions designed a program incorporating Jemena s procedures and templates. This program built on existing training within their framework and added new knowledge and skills.

To create a training solution for their supervisors and team leaders to upskill them in their capabilities directly relating to communication, consultation and leading their teams safely.
The solution
Through consultation, Leadership Dimensions customised a modularised program aligned to units of competency towards the BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management.
The module design provides high potential employees, supervisors, branch managers, operations managers and regional managers with knowledge and skills to support their leadership communication and abilities in leading teams. This program would then advance to a full qualification through further program days for branch managers, regional managers, high potential employees and operations managers to progress to the full BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management qualification.

LDN are currently delivering this program throughout JJ s Waste in Victoria and will be expanding to other states within Australia.
